Society Maketh a Man

Society Maketh a Man

Swirling round in my thoughts I sat,
With my ears soaking the faintest din.
Watching others talking of this and that
Calm, was I, balanced was my Ying.

Rugged and unfresh, he looked to me.
Ill were his fits, on his fragile frame.
A misfit amongst us he seemed to be,
Unrefined, Underprivileged, a nameless name.

Invisible to the pairs of eyes, seemed the lad.
Effortless was effort made to make place for him.
Despondency consumed the shards of pride he had,
Sat he, near my feet, surely not his whim.

We sat, gazing at the passers-by, blurred.
Bumps and pot holes combat he to stay put,
Clutching at the sides he sat, his fragility stirred.
While I cocked my head at the sound of a woot.

Harsh laughter pierced through my ears,
Of collegiates parked in car that stood next to us.
A silent pledge he breathed at the rudeness of his seers.
Heart wrenching it was, under breath I uttered a curse.

Leading a cushy life they are apathetic towards others.
Didn't he denude his body language of distress?
Anti social he'll be one day, when further he dithers,
The child of society's uncourtly and lowly jests.

Society maketh a man, that I very well know.
But a Society, it is of wretched surface gliders,
Insensitive who are to other's woes,
Shall one day make Him an anti social, yet a survivor.

Oh well. Society never makes a man. A man makes himself. Society is non-existent. Others must not be allowed to arrest your own development, because it is others who will try to not let you be what you want.

Good to see you write after a long time Shreya

thanks!! :D

Well..he sure does..but the society that we live in does play an important role in shaping up an individual's character..if the society doesn't accept you..u don't accept it either..n that makes a person anti-social..this is my opinion :)

Hey Shreya..
You write really well.

I quite agree with your idea that social phenomena have a deep impact on people.

A case in point would be an average person in Iraq or Afghanistan on whom civil war has been thrust and who lives in constant fear of death. Why would such a person not think of revenge and become a terrorist?
